I Embraced My First Brazilian Waxing Experience

“Alright, now pull your knees up to your chest. It’s time for the butt strips!”

How did I find myself in this moment? Is this really happening?

Just two days prior, I had a conversation with my close friend, who revealed that she visits a salon every 4-6 weeks for a Brazilian wax. “You just lie there, completely exposed… for a STRANGER? But I haven’t done that since my college days!” She swears by it, and her husband loves it too—she’s been getting waxed for a decade. She encouraged me to book an appointment, but I quickly declined, saying, “No way, I could never do that.”

We laughed, but the thought lingered. Was this a rite of passage for women, especially moms, that I somehow overlooked?

In my mind, Brazilian waxes were reserved for young, fit women, perhaps bikini models. Could a 40-year-old mom of five truly partake? Is this something for women with postpartum bodies, wobbly bits, and thighs that haven’t seen a bikini since childhood? Should I consider this?

With a racing mind, I turned to Google, seeking answers to my anxious questions.

  • “Can a plus-size person get a Brazilian wax?”
  • “Can someone with a FUPA get a Brazilian wax?”
  • “Will they ask me to move my FUPA during a Brazilian wax?”
  • “What if I break the waxing table?”
  • “Do I have to get on all fours during a Brazilian wax?”
  • “What if I fart?”

You get the idea.

To my surprise, I discovered that people of all shapes, sizes, and ages get waxed regularly—men, women, young, old, skinny, and curvy. It’s a common part of many people’s hygiene routines. Considering my razor burns and frequent ingrown hairs, I quickly decided to make an appointment at a popular waxing salon for the following day. I knew I had to act fast; otherwise, I’d surely back out. Life is too short to miss out on experiences, right?

Twelve hours later, I found myself in the parking lot of the salon.

What are you doing? Just go home!
They’re going to laugh at you!
This is going to HURT!
Someone is going to wax your BUTTHOLE!

After some deep breathing, I mustered the courage to enter the salon. I informed the receptionist that I was a Brazilian waxing newbie. She greeted me with a warm smile, “Fantastic! This will change your life! You’re going to leave feeling like a new woman!”

I found it hard to believe that transforming into a Sphynx cat could be life-altering, but I was ready for the ride… I think.

Moments later, I was led to a waxing room by my new pal, Sarah. She assured me that my body was perfectly normal and that she sees countless vaginas and buttholes daily. She’s seen it all. Her warm demeanor instantly made me feel safe and comfortable.

Time to disrobe and hop on the table, which, surprisingly, didn’t break.

Sarah explained the entire process and guided me in holding my skin tight when necessary. It wasn’t awkward at all; I felt no judgment, and nothing was as alarming as I had imagined. Surprisingly, the discomfort was minimal. While I wouldn’t call the sensation enjoyable, it was far from terrible. The wax was warm and smooth, and we chatted about our summer plans, which helped distract me—turns out we vacation at the same beach!

“Okay, pull your knees up to your chest; it’s time for the butt strips!”

I covered my eyes with my hands, cringing at the thought of her seeing a part of me my husband may not have even seen. Am I really going to let Sarah wax my BUTTHOLE?

Yes, and honestly, it wasn’t bad at all. And I didn’t even fart!

As I put my underwear back on, I was left wondering what had just happened. Back in the waiting area, the smiling receptionist asked, “Wasn’t that wonderful? Don’t you feel amazing?”

The entire experience lasted less than 15 minutes, but it felt like a blur. Suddenly, I felt sexy and clean, brimming with confidence—a bounce in my step that I didn’t expect from losing my pubic hair.

Will I do this again? Was the pain, embarrassment, and anxiety worth it? Absolutely. I swiped my credit card for 12 more sessions.

“See you in four weeks, Sarah! My new best friend!”
