Although the school administration had previously asked him to remove references to his queerness and experiences with mental health from his speech, Turner stood firm. They even requested he take off a Pride flag draped over his gown, but he proudly wore it throughout the ceremony.
“Part of our identity, our year, and our struggle is 2021,” he affirmed. “We’re still here, and we’ve adapted to challenges we never thought we’d face.”
“Believe in yourself, Class of 2021,” he concluded, earning a well-deserved standing ovation. “Each one of you is enough, and each of you can change the world. Thank you, and congratulations!”
