Actor James Franco has reportedly come to a settlement agreement totaling over $2.2 million related to allegations of sexual misconduct. This settlement follows a lawsuit initiated in 2019 by former students from his acting school, who claimed that Franco exploited young women in the industry. Although Franco and his legal team have agreed to the terms, the settlement still awaits judicial approval.

The settlement, recently filed in court, specifies that Franco will pay a total of $2,235,000. This amount includes $894,000 allocated to the women who accused him of sexual exploitation, and $1,341,000 designated for a common fund intended for plaintiffs alleging fraud against both Franco and his acting institution. While Franco has consented to the settlement terms, he does not admit any liability regarding the allegations.

As part of the agreement, plaintiffs Sarah Tither-Kaplan and Toni Gaal will release their claims against Franco in exchange for the financial compensation. If approved, Tither-Kaplan is set to receive $670,500 (after deducting $223,500 for legal fees), while Gaal will receive $223,500 (with $74,500 in attorney fees taken out).

According to reports, the common fund of $1.3 million will be distributed among former students who paid tuition for Master Class courses or enrolled at Franco’s Studio 4 Film School in New York or Los Angeles from February 2014 until the school closed in 2017. The lawsuit alleges that Franco’s film school served primarily as a means to attract young women for personal and professional exploitation, disguised as an educational opportunity. An investigation by the Los Angeles Times in 2018 uncovered multiple allegations of sexual harassment and abuse directed at Franco from several women, detailing how they were pressured into explicit scenes under the pretense of landing roles in his films.

Franco’s actions have not only raised significant concerns within Hollywood but also led to claims of sexual assault from other individuals, including his former co-star, Kelly Matthews.
