In a groundbreaking decision influenced by insights from the National Eating Disorders Association, Pinterest has decided to eliminate all weight loss advertisements from its platform. The digital pinboard site, which has long prohibited body-shaming content and harmful weight loss products, will now also disallow ads that “discuss weight loss, reference BMI, or feature before-and-after images or any visuals that idealize specific body types,” as stated by content director, Mia Johnson.
“Pinterest is dedicated to fostering a safe and uplifting environment for all users,” the company declared in a recent Instagram update. “We are continuously evolving our policies for the better. Our goal is to promote content that encourages body neutrality and acceptance, enabling you to seek inspiration for a life you love.”
This new policy positions Pinterest as the only significant social media platform to entirely ban weight loss ads. “This is an extension of our existing ad policies that have already banned body shaming and unsafe weight loss products or claims,” the company noted in a blog post. “We urge others in the industry to follow suit and recognize that there is no universal solution that fits everyone.”
Prohibited Content
The blog post outlined the types of content already prohibited on their site, which includes:
- Weight loss pills, supplements, or other related products
- Before-and-after weight loss images
- Procedures for weight loss such as liposuction
- Body shaming content, including images or language that ridicule specific body types
- Claims about unrealistic cosmetic results
Updated Guidelines
The updated guidelines will now encompass:
- Any language or imagery related to weight loss
- Testimonials concerning weight loss products
- Imagery or language that glorifies or disparages particular body types
- References to Body Mass Index (BMI) or similar metrics
- Products that promise weight loss through topical application
Pinterest will still accept ads that promote a healthy lifestyle as long as they do not emphasize weight loss. The policy was developed with input from the National Eating Disorders Association.
Elizabeth Thompson, the Interim CEO of NEDA, stated, “We commend Pinterest for taking a pioneering stance by being the first platform to ban all ads featuring weight-loss language and imagery. This essential step prioritizes the mental health and well-being of Pinterest users, particularly those affected by diet culture, body shaming, and eating disorders. We hope this global policy inspires other organizations to assess potentially harmful ad messages and create their own impactful policies.”
Pinterest has also reported a significant increase in user interest in positive content, noting that searches for “healthy mindset quotes” have surged 13 times since 2020, while searches for “body neutrality” and “stop body-shaming quotes” have risen fivefold.
Ultimately, no one logs into Pinterest—or any social media platform—expecting to encounter body-shaming content or intrusive diet promotions. This is a commendable step forward, and we hope other platforms will swiftly adopt similar measures.
