We kept in touch via text during power outages, and Ms. Clara temporarily relocated to friends’ homes when her heat went out.
With the arrival of spring and the distribution of vaccines, my kids began visiting Ms. Clara at her home more frequently. They played games like I-Spy and card games, and my daughter was thrilled to plan a dance performance for Ms. Clara, expressing her nerves since she usually only performed for family. Ms. Clara reassured her, saying, “That’s alright. I’m family now.”
I was anxious about my twins’ sixth birthday celebration amidst the pandemic. How could I make it special? It turned out their new friends—our neighbors—were all they needed. We had a fantastic day filled with a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle and LOL Dolls theme, ice cream, and gifts. My son’s infectious laughter during Red Rover spoke volumes.
As summer 2021 approached, we began to resume our normal activities. While we may not see Ms. Clara and Ms. Laura as frequently as before, the bond that was formed during that challenging year remains strong. My kids still ask to play with them after dinner, returning home with stories and smiles.
Witnessing this unexpected friendship has been a unique and heartwarming experience, transforming my children for the better. Neighbors who were once strangers have now become a second family, and it has been a beautiful gift to see Ms. Clara and Ms. Laura embrace my kids as their own.
