If you were to ask my family, “What’s one thing Mom can’t live without?” they’d all shout in unison, “coffee!” Sure, I enjoy my snacks, wine, and late-night TV binges, but in a pinch—like if we were being chased by zombies—I could forgo those luxuries. However, I’d definitely raise a fuss if I hadn’t had my coffee that morning.
Coffee is life! It’s the one thing I’d refuse to give up, even over wine or snacks. So, discovering that coffee comes with health perks is music to my ears, especially since I practically fuel my days with it.
According to a recent study highlighted by The New York Times, coffee consumption is associated with a lower risk of various diseases such as Parkinson’s, heart issues, Type 2 diabetes, liver cancer, and even depression. Johns Hopkins Medicine also notes that coffee may offer protection against Alzheimer’s disease, which significantly impacts women. The research shows that women over 65 who drink two to three cups of coffee daily have a reduced risk of developing dementia.
Moreover, a study tracking over 200,000 individuals for up to 30 years found that those consuming three to five cups of coffee daily had a 15% lower risk of early death compared to non-coffee drinkers, as reported by The New York Times. They also noted that coffee drinkers are less likely to succumb to major health issues like coronary heart disease and stroke.
For all the moms out there, when you say “coffee is literally keeping me alive,” you might just be onto something! Coffee contains beneficial compounds such as polyphenols and antioxidants that can help inhibit cancer cell growth and combat inflammation, which are crucial in fighting diseases.
Even more surprising, Cleveland Clinic states that coffee is a significant source of nutrients like B vitamins and potassium, and Andrea Dunn, RD, claims that it’s the best source of antioxidants in the American diet. What a delightful revelation to know my coffee habit is actually doing me some good!
That said, experts stress that while coffee has its benefits, it shouldn’t replace healthy habits like a balanced diet, hydration, exercise, and regular check-ups. It’s important to consume it in moderation—especially during pregnancy, as too much caffeine can pose risks.
In my younger years, I relied heavily on coffee during long shifts, which led to unhealthy habits. Now, I enjoy my daily coffee while also ensuring I stay hydrated and eat balanced meals. It feels good to know that my morning routine contributes to a healthier lifestyle!
Now, I’m aware that indulging in flavored creamers might not be the healthiest choice, but the health benefits of coffee itself are something I celebrate. Ready for another cup?
