In a significant development, actor James Franco has reportedly reached a settlement regarding a sexual assault lawsuit filed by former students of his acting school. The lawsuit emerged in 2019, following various allegations from students and women within the industry, claiming that Franco had engaged in sexual abuse and exploitation. The settlement, submitted to the court for approval, totals $2,235,000. Although Franco and his legal team have consented to the settlement terms, final approval from a judge is still pending.
As part of the agreement, Franco does not accept any responsibility or liability regarding the allegations. In return for the monetary settlement, plaintiffs Sarah Tither-Kaplan and Toni Gaal will withdraw their claims against him. Should the settlement be validated, Tither-Kaplan is set to receive $670,500 (after deducting $223,500 in legal fees), while Gaal will obtain $223,500 (after a $74,500 deduction for her attorneys).
The Los Angeles Times indicates that the common fund will benefit students who enrolled in Master Class courses or attended Franco’s Studio 4 Film School in New York and Los Angeles from February 2014 until the schools ceased operations in 2017. The lawsuit posited that Franco’s film school was a facade designed to ensnare young women, allowing him to exploit them financially and sexually. An investigation by the Los Angeles Times in 2018 uncovered allegations from five women accusing Franco of harassment and exploitation, with some stating he pressured them into explicit scenarios, suggesting they could secure roles in his films only if they participated in sexual scenes during classes.
Franco “sought to create a pipeline of young women who were subjected to his personal and professional sexual exploitation in the name of education,” according to court documents. Additionally, he has faced accusations of sexual assault from his former co-star, Bella Carter.
