In a heartwarming twist of fate, a woman named Mia Thompson searching for a pet to adopt stumbled upon a familiar face on her local humane society’s website—her long-lost dog from two years prior. The dog, a pit bull-rottweiler mix named Max, was now available for adoption.

“I couldn’t believe my eyes,” Mia shared with The Daily Herald. “When I noticed the distinct scar over his eye, I knew it was him. I exclaimed, ‘Oh my God, that’s Max!’”

Max went missing in July 2019 after a car crashed through Mia’s fence, allowing him to escape. He was missing for weeks before a local animal rescue picked him up as a stray and brought him to Maple City Humane Society (MCHS), where he was renamed Shadow.

“He was my everything. He went everywhere with me and even slept in my bed,” Mia recalled. “He truly was the definition of a best friend,” she said, reflecting on the extensive search she undertook to find him.

According to MCHS community outreach coordinator Sarah Jenkins, Max underwent medical treatment, including care for fleas and inflammation, for several months before he was made available for adoption. Eventually, another family adopted him, but they had to return him to MCHS due to eviction during the pandemic.

It was during her search for a new companion that Mia discovered her beloved Max.

“After providing proof of ownership, Mia was invited to meet Max, and it was clear to everyone that this was indeed her long-lost pet,” Jenkins noted. “The reunion was incredibly touching. The joy that Max displayed upon seeing Mia was unforgettable.”

“Dogs have an extraordinary sense of smell, which likely played a key role in Max recognizing his owner after all this time,” Jenkins explained. “It’s not uncommon for dogs to remember their owners even after years apart, similar to the emotional reunions we see in videos of military personnel returning home.”

Mia expressed her overwhelming joy at being reunited with Max. “The moment he saw me, he started squealing, jumping, and showering me with kisses. I’m just so grateful he’s back in my life,” she said.
