“There are many cats in the area, and we’ve been deploying our Animal Services Department with live traps to locate them, while also assisting volunteers who are feeding these animals,” Martinez said.
Gina Nicole Vlaset, co-founder of Kitty Haven, shared the joyous news on social media, calling Friday a “remarkable day.”
“A black cat resembling Binx from apartment #904 was brought to us by FEMA. Authorities have been visiting our Miami Beach office since last night, and the cat was found near the debris!” Vlaset wrote. “We just needed a glimmer of hope in this disaster. One of the survivors visited to confirm it was her cat, and it WAS! We’re overjoyed to help in any way we can. These families have lost so much, but our community’s teamwork has made a difference.”
At the mayor’s briefing, it was noted that the death toll from the collapse had risen to 79, with 53 individuals identified and 61 still unaccounted for.
“Thank you to everyone who helped reunite Binx with his family,” Mayor Martinez tweeted, expressing her gratitude on behalf of the community.
