It’s Your Baby — Style Them as You Wish

Can we all agree that babies are absolutely adorable? Seriously, how can you resist those chubby cheeks and chunky thighs? The sight of a giggling baby can brighten even the darkest mood. And what’s more fun than dressing a little one? Picking outfits for your mini-me is an absolute joy. But are you imposing too much of your own style on them? Not at all.
My first child was a boy, and from day one, I treated him like a living doll. I dressed him in styles I found adorable, like cute onesies and trendy pants from Target and The Gap. For special occasions, he donned smocked shortalls and white blouses. I was in love with what my mother referred to as “classic clothing,” though my partner thought it was a bit excessive. He believed our son would one day resent me for those outfits. Fast forward to today—he’s thirteen and hasn’t mentioned it once. Those sailor suits didn’t scar him; they created cherished memories captured in photographs.
With two more sons who wore hand-me-downs from their older brother, I often faced scrutiny. Was I wrong to dress them in used onesies that had likely seen their fair share of baby messes? Absolutely not! Juggling three boys under five meant I had to save money wherever I could, and those pull-on pants were a lifesaver. Now that they’re all in school, they’ve turned out just fine, even after wearing footed pajamas with holes.
Then came my fourth child, a girl. From the moment she was born, her head full of hair seemed to demand a bow. So, I adorned her with one every single day. Now at five, she still loves wearing oversized bows. Did I encourage her? Definitely! But her love for dresses and shiny sequins is all her own. I didn’t turn her into a fashionista; she just has a flair for it!
Each of my children has their own unique personality. Despite the fact that my three boys often wore the same clothes, they are as different as can be. I have countless pictures of them together in identical outfits, including some from when they wore my brothers’ smocked clothing as babies. Spoiler alert: none of them have cut ties with their grandmother because of the adorable bunnies they wore in those early years. Our clothing choices didn’t have any lasting impact on them.
To be honest, I never considered how the outfits my children wore might impact them. I simply chose what I loved. Dressing them up is part of the joy of parenting. After carrying a baby for nine months, the moment they arrive, you want the whole world to see your perfect little angel. And what better way to showcase that pride than through their outfits? Whether you prefer 80s band T-shirts, smocked dresses, or thrift store finds, it’s all about what makes you happy. It’s your baby, so go ahead and express yourself!
If you’re like me and in your 40s, you might remember George Michael’s iconic hit “Freedom! ‘90,” with its poignant line: “I just hope you understand, sometimes the clothes do not make the man.” Those cozy lamb pajamas you choose for your baby at night won’t dictate their personality.
As your child matures, they will develop their own tastes. One of my sons exclusively wore blue for nearly two years, and we fully supported his choice. Your child might embrace your style or go in a completely different direction—that’s perfectly okay. Allow them the freedom to explore their individuality. Their unique preferences in food, music, TV shows, and clothing are what make them special.
Ultimately, there’s no right or wrong way to dress your baby—unless we’re talking about temperature. Ensure they’re warm or cool enough as needed. The rest is entirely up to you. Relish the time with your baby and clothe them in what you love. No matter what they wear, they will always be adorable, smiley, and perfect in your eyes.
