A sleepaway camp in upstate New York, accommodating up to 550 campers and 275 staff, has reported that 31 unvaccinated children under the age of 12 have tested positive for COVID-19. This outbreak comes amid a nationwide surge in cases, largely attributed to the Delta variant, the emerging Lambda variant, and insufficient vaccination rates to achieve herd immunity.
The outbreak originated in the girls’ dormitories. Camp nurses acted swiftly upon noticing symptoms among the campers, leading to immediate testing. The first positive result was confirmed on July 17, and by July 22, a total of 31 cases had been identified.

President Joe Biden has expressed optimism that the FDA will soon approve vaccinations for this age group, suggesting that children may need to wear masks in school this fall.
The camp reassured families in their letter, stating, “The health and welfare of our camp community is our top priority. Every camper is welcome back after the quarantine period, and we will gladly return or rebate pro rata tuition.”
New York’s vaccination rate stands slightly above the national average, with about 62% having received at least one dose and approximately 56% fully vaccinated, according to the CDC. In contrast, the overall U.S. vaccination rate is around 49%.
