A new report published by state attorney general Letitia James has concluded that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has sexually harassed multiple women, thereby breaching both federal and state laws. This report follows a thorough four-month investigation into the allegations surrounding sexual harassment and the creation of a toxic work atmosphere.
The comprehensive 165-page document determined that Cuomo sexually harassed both current and former employees of the government, resulting in a “hostile work environment.” The misconduct included unwanted physical contact, inappropriate remarks, and unauthorized touching of intimate areas. While many allegations against the Democratic governor were already public, the report disclosed two new claims of sexual harassment, including one from an unnamed female state trooper and another from an employee at an energy company. James stated, “Governor Cuomo sexually harassed current and former state employees in violation of both federal and state laws.” She emphasized that the independent investigation found that the governor had harassed multiple women, many of whom were young, through unwanted groping, kisses, hugs, and inappropriate comments.
To date, Cuomo has not resigned and continues to deny many of the allegations, claiming he only apologizes if his actions made anyone “feel uncomfortable.” The report did not recommend criminal prosecution against Cuomo. James pointed out that the findings portrayed “a deeply disturbing, yet clear picture” of conduct that undermines the integrity of state government and reveals injustices at high levels.
The investigation specifically countered Cuomo’s defense that his actions were mere “customary” friendly gestures, concluding that he fostered a work environment filled with bullying, fear, and intimidation. Carl Heastie, the Speaker of the State Assembly, announced that they would conduct a thorough review of the report, stating, “The conduct by the governor outlined in this report would indicate someone who is not fit for office.”
