In the wake of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, the Taliban has once again seized control, forcing the country into turmoil and prompting many officials, including President Ashraf Ghani, to flee. Amidst the chaos, Afghan citizens are desperately seeking ways to escape, and concerns are mounting for the future of women and girls living under the new extremist regime. Tragically, one of the most vulnerable voices is that of 27-year-old Zarifa Ghafari, Afghanistan’s youngest female mayor, who expressed her fears for her safety.
Ghafari, the first woman to be elected as mayor in the conservative city of Maidan Shar in Wardak province, stated, “I’m bracing for them to come. There’s no one to support me or my family. It’s just me and my husband, and they will come for people like me and kill me.” She also lamented her inability to leave, saying, “I can’t abandon my family. Where would I even go?”
While some senior government officials managed to escape, Ghafari was not as fortunate. She has previously been targeted by the Taliban, surviving three assassination attempts. Tragically, her father was killed by the group just last November.
Just weeks before the Taliban’s resurgence, Ghafari had expressed optimism about Afghanistan’s future, believing that the younger generation, equipped with social media, would continue to fight for their rights and progress. “Younger people are aware of what’s happening. They have social media. They communicate,” she shared at that time.
Despite the Taliban’s assurances that citizens’ lives and dignity would be protected, there is little trust among the people of Afghanistan, particularly among women and girls who have historically faced oppression. Activist Malala Yousafzai, who survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban in Pakistan, expressed her shock at the rapid developments in Afghanistan.
As the situation unfolds, our thoughts are with Zarifa Ghafari and all the people of Afghanistan.
