If there’s a silver lining to the dark years of the Trump administration (and it’s a tough task to find one), it’s that it laid bare the persistent racism that still infects our culture. I, like many others, was shocked to realize how deep-rooted these issues remain, even as we navigate the 21st century. As a white woman, I had the naive belief that we had made significant strides, and that the hatred toward individuals based on their ethnicity or skin color was largely a relic of the past.
Clearly, I was mistaken. I had been enjoying the privileges my skin color provided, unaware of the daily realities faced by others. Now, as a 41-year-old mother of three white children who grew up during a Trump presidency, I understand the critical work that lies ahead. It’s our responsibility—as those who can navigate society without the burden of racial prejudice—to advocate for change so that every American can experience safety and freedom.

Ignoring this issue will not make it disappear. Denying the existence of racism or disguising it under the guise of religion is unacceptable. All of our children deserve a brighter future.
