After binge-watching a few episodes of Disney Plus’s latest Marvel series, “What If,” I found myself pondering a thought: What if mothers turned the tables on their households? Rather than our kids running off, what if we took a break and ran away for a weekend?
What if I booked a hotel room just for myself to enjoy some uninterrupted TV time? Would it be worth the expense? Would I be prepared for the chaos awaiting me when I returned? Well, there was only one way to find out, so I went for it!
I checked out of my home and into a hotel for the weekend — just me. I stocked up on my favorite snacks and, yes, I indulged in a TV marathon! Why? Because I absolutely deserve it! And honestly, I believe every mom should treat herself to at least one weekend getaway each year, if not once a month.
Your Friendly Reminder
So here’s your friendly reminder, fellow moms: take that much-needed break! Spend some quality time alone, away from the kids and perhaps even from your equally delightful spouse. It might sound silly to pay for peace and quiet, but how can you put a price on that kind of bliss?
Imagine a whole weekend of tranquility, where it’s just you and your favorite shows, devouring all your preferred treats without little hands reaching out for a bite. Picture waking up at 9 a.m. — yes, 9, not 6 — flipping your pillow to the cool side and drifting back to sleep, all without anyone asking you to whip up breakfast.
Overcoming Skepticism
I get it if you’re skeptical about leaving your family behind; I was too! But the idea didn’t just pop into my head because of the Marvel show. A friend of mine, Sarah, had been advocating for these solo weekends for ages, and she takes them quarterly!
She taught me it’s perfectly acceptable to step away for a while, and you know what? She was absolutely right. My weekend was revitalizing! I ordered takeout, lounged in bed, and binge-watched “Clickbait” after catching up on “What If.” By the end of it, I was genuinely excited to reunite with my daughter, even though she’s nine and not a fan of me calling her “my baby.”
Recharging for Responsibilities
My little retreat recharged my energy for the first week back to school after a long period of virtual learning. I woke up the next morning ready to tackle the day, without any resentment towards my responsibilities.
So, if you’ve been waiting for a sign to take a break, here it is! Treat yourself to a weekend away, free from demands, chores, and especially that nagging mom guilt. After all that we’ve endured during these challenging years, it’s time to reclaim our happiness, safely, of course.
Now, go ahead and plan that much-deserved getaway!
