Like Many Mothers, Sarah Thompson is “Doing Her Best Just to Keep Up”

Sarah Thompson doesn’t claim to have it all figured out. In a world filled with chaos and uncertainty, especially surrounding issues like health and safety protocols, she earnestly seeks to bring a little positivity and clarity to those around her. “The school year begins in stages, but today is the moment for my family—we’re officially back. Three out of three masked, two out of three vaccinated (hopefully soon for those under 11), each one of us feeling eager, hesitant, brave, and—if I can gauge it—smiling behind the masks. A huge thank you to our teachers, administrators, and school staff for receiving a year and a half of emotions from both kids and parents—loud and big, quiet and profound. Thanks to science for guiding us this far toward health and freedom. And let’s not forget the importance of humor, community support, and the constant rise of the sun, no matter the circumstances. Please, God, keep us safe,” she shared as she sent her three children off to in-person classes.

Once part of a well-known Hollywood couple, Sarah has embraced her celebrity status and transformed it into a force for good. She actively supports organizations like Save the Children, advocating for underprivileged kids in America who lack access to basic necessities like healthy food and educational resources. Additionally, she co-founded a company, Once Upon a Farm, which recently launched its Million Meals initiative to benefit Save the Children, aiming to provide a million meals to children in need by 2024. This initiative kicked off with her special edition Farmer Sarah’s Pumpkin Oatmeal Cookie flavor, made with organic ingredients.

“I realized early on that part of my motivation for co-founding this business was to contribute meaningfully to Save the Children’s mission. I had no idea that I would be surrounded by a team so passionate and driven by purpose. It’s truly been an incredible experience,” she said.

By any standard, Sarah—who has also signed a production deal with Netflix—is a dynamic individual. However, she doesn’t view herself that way. “Honestly, I find it amusing. You’re calling this a brand? It feels more like a chaotic journey for me. I don’t see myself as a powerhouse,” says the 49-year-old.

Initially, she hesitated to promote her charitable efforts, concerned it might come off as self-serving. “I was hesitant to speak about it publicly because it felt like I was seeking attention. But my mentor at Save, Mark, advised me to use my platform to share important stories, so I’ve tried to embrace that,” she shared.

During our Zoom interview, she occasionally covered her face. “No, it’s not from bad cosmetic surgery. I just came from the dentist, and my mouth is numb. I don’t have any cavities, just a small fix,” she clarified.

Sarah strives to convey that even glamorous celebrities are not perfect, a lesson she shares with her children, Lily, 15, Mia, 12, and Noah, 9. “They see me working hard. It’s important for them to see me as a beginner, willing to admit when I don’t know something. I want them to recognize that I keep showing up, even if I get frustrated with myself for not recalling everything I’ve learned,” she said. “That’s the lesson I hope they’re absorbing.”

Unlike some celebrity moms, Sarah does not refer to her kids as her best friends. “I have plenty of friends already. I don’t need my children to fill that role; they should focus on their own lives,” she explained. “I love spending one-on-one time with them, but I don’t want them to feel pressured to be my friends.”

Her life is already full of challenges. “I’ve got three kids in three different schools, and it’s a total whirlwind. There are forms everywhere, constant emails, and COVID protocols to manage. People assume I’m organized because of the roles I play, but I’m really just trying to keep up,” she admitted.
