October is here, and with it comes the excitement of fall—think pumpkin spice lattes, cozy jeans, and boots. However, COVID is still lurking in the background, altering our typical Halloween celebrations. If your family is preparing for a different kind of Halloween this year, don’t fret! We’ve compiled a variety of fun and safe ideas that will keep everyone entertained.

Host a Spooky Movie Night

With kids ranging from five to almost thirteen, our family movie nights have to cater to everyone’s tastes. Since my children prefer to avoid anything too scary, we opt for “scary-not-scary” films. If traditional trick-or-treating is off the table this year, consider a movie marathon. Classics like The Addams Family, Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds, or festive favorites like It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, and Hocus Pocus could be great choices. Grab a cheap plastic pumpkin and fill it with snacks each kid loves. If your family enjoys horror, go for it—but don’t say I didn’t warn you about the late-night wake-ups from nightmares!

Organize a Halloween Egg Hunt

Whether you have a yard or just some indoor space, pull those Easter eggs from storage. Fill them with your kids’ favorite candies and hide them around the house or yard. To add an element of excitement, try a flashlight egg hunt after dark. This way, you’ll ensure your kids get the treats they’ll actually enjoy and skip the unwanted candy (like some generic Tootsie Rolls)!

Create a Costume Parade

As a child, I fondly remember dressing up for school Halloween parades. Allow your kids to wear their costumes and march around the neighborhood, showing off their creativity. It’s a simple yet thrilling activity that everyone can enjoy.

Dive into a Good Book

My kids are avid readers, so we like to find Halloween-themed books for them to enjoy on the spooky night. Treat them to a bag of Halloween chocolates to nibble while they read. If reading isn’t their thing, try some fun activity books or how-to-draw books instead.

Play Video Games Together

For older kids, consider getting a new video game to play as a family. Yes, it’s time to dust off those gaming skills! Snacks are a must; my kids love trying out gourmet popcorn flavors—bacon-flavored, anyone? Don’t forget some jelly beans for extra fun while you game.

Get Creative with Pumpkins

I’m not a fan of carving pumpkins, so we’ve found a fun alternative: decorating pumpkins with craft supplies. Grab some rhinestones, googly eyes, and glue, and let your kids unleash their creativity. These decorated pumpkins last longer than traditional jack-o-lanterns, too!

Host an Apple-Themed Buffet

If your kids enjoy cooking, consider making apple-themed treats like apple muffins, caramel apples, and apple cider. You can even combine this activity with others, like during your costume parade or gaming night.

Visit an Orchard or Pumpkin Patch

Picking apples or pumpkins can be a great and safe outing. Opt for local farms that aren’t overly commercialized to avoid crowds. Plus, take lots of photos to capture the memories!

Spread Some Halloween Cheer

Brighten a friend’s or family member’s day by “booing” their yard with some festive surprises. Take some of the Halloween eggs you made and leave them with a note on their porch. Alternatively, consider dropping off Halloween goody baskets for those who might not get many trick-or-treaters.

Engage in a Service Project

Get involved by collecting leftover candy for local charities or raking leaves for a neighbor. You could also host a costume drive for kids in need and create homemade Halloween cards to share with residents at a local nursing home.

Adapting Halloween traditions is totally doable with a little creativity. You can still enjoy this spooky season while keeping everyone safe.
