A recent study has uncovered that a small group of Twitter accounts is behind the majority of hateful tweets directed at Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. This analysis, which examined over 114,000 tweets, indicates that just 83 accounts are responsible for nearly 70% of the negative content targeting the couple, pointing to a systematic effort to undermine the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
According to the analytics firm Bot Sentinel, these accounts are singularly dedicated to posting derogatory messages, particularly focusing on Markle. The study suggests a high level of orchestration among these accounts, revealing that the negative tweets are not simply the work of disgruntled individuals but part of a calculated campaign originating from a connected source.
The findings highlight that while a few main accounts are generating hateful content, they receive support from others with larger followings, allowing the messages to be amplified. This activity is characterized by strategic coordination and the use of techniques designed to evade detection by Twitter’s moderation systems. Some accounts have even been found actively recruiting others to join this initiative.
The researchers provided examples of the hateful rhetoric, which often includes manipulated images of Markle and relies on deeply racist stereotypes. BuzzFeed News discovered further instances of disturbing content, including calls for violence against Markle and unfounded claims regarding her children. Unfortunately, many of these tweets manage to escape Twitter’s content moderation due to their deceptive nature.
Christopher Bouzy, CEO of Bot Sentinel, emphasized that this campaign is driven by individuals who are adept at navigating Twitter’s algorithms to avoid detection. “This is a sophisticated operation by people who know how to manipulate the platform,” he stated. Some of the accounts involved have even begun to boycott BuzzFeed for highlighting the study’s findings.
In response to the report, a Twitter representative asserted that there is no evidence of widespread coordination. However, Bouzy contests this assertion, leaving the motivations behind these attacks—whether they stem from personal animosity, racism, or an intention to damage the couple’s credibility—unclear.
