I wouldn’t label myself as clumsy, yet the numerous times I’ve had to fix my phone after dropping it might suggest otherwise. To identify which cities are the most accident-prone, Asurion, along with tech repair retailer uBreakiFix by Asurion, analyzed customer data, focusing on phone repairs and breakage claims. They also looked at online searches related to trips, slips, and falls, and assessed the number of personal injury lawyers and orthopedic surgeons per capita in different cities.
While I’ve never sprained an ankle from tripping or walked into a glass door, I do keep a bag of rice handy to dry out my phone when necessary. Plus, I always use a phone case and screen protector, yet I still manage to crack my device. Interestingly, my mishaps didn’t contribute to my city—or even my state—making it onto the list of the top 50 clumsiest cities in the U.S.
Curious if your city is known for its grace or its clumsiness? Asurion revealed that seven out of the top ten clumsiest cities are located in the southern U.S. The top three cities with the highest clumsiness rates are New Orleans, LA; Raleigh, NC; and Jacksonville, FL. Conversely, the cities considered the most graceful are primarily in the northern states or along the West Coast, with San Francisco taking the lead. This aligns with the idea that grace and culture often go hand in hand, as San Francisco is recognized as the queer capital of the U.S., where elegance is a common trait.
Moreover, Asurion offered insights into why certain areas may experience higher rates of clumsiness. The southern U.S. is not only hotter but also more humid, leading to sweaty hands that can easily drop phones. The average daily humidity in the ten clumsiest cities is around 71.5%, significantly higher than the 66.8% average of other cities evaluated. Many of these accident-prone cities are also popular spring break destinations, which often brings rowdy college students who may not be as careful with their belongings.
On the other hand, the reasons for grace often stem from maturity and age. Nearly half of the cities with the least clumsiness have a significant population of residents aged 65 and older. Additionally, individuals in more cultured areas may exhibit more caution with their devices. Yet, there are certainly exceptions; some highly cultured individuals can be quite the hot mess, while others seamlessly multi-task in busy environments like New York City.
Clumsiness can also be attributed to inherent traits. A study from the University of Delaware examined 1,500 athletes to investigate their neurological and cognitive abilities. It discovered that injured athletes had lower reaction times and processing speeds compared to their uninjured counterparts. According to Charles Swanik, the study’s lead author, clumsiness often results from moments of distraction, though it can be mitigated through focus and training. Activities that enhance balance and stability, as well as vision screenings, can also help reduce clumsiness.
However, sudden onset clumsiness might indicate a more serious medical issue, such as a stroke or intense stress. Adults may experience clumsiness as a symptom of aging or neurological disorders, while children can sometimes be clumsy during growth spurts. In some cases, developmental coordination disorders like dyspraxia can affect a child’s coordination but can improve with practice and the use of adaptive tools.
Everyone has those days where they glide through effortlessly, while others involve tripping over boxes. I embrace both types of days without shame. I’ll continue to utilize phone protection plans and remain mindful of where I step, as I seem to be a bit clumsier than I’d like to admit.
