The day after the “Friends” Reunion aired, I caught a segment on my local radio station where the hosts were fixated on how much the cast had aged. Seriously? Are we really expected to ignore the passage of time since that show was a cultural phenomenon?

It seems like everyone called in to say the same thing: everyone has aged significantly, except for one star. Well, considering the last episode aired in May of 2004—seventeen years ago—it’s no surprise that they’ve all gotten older. Who hasn’t?

I’m a big fan of the actress in question, but just because she appears to have aged more gracefully doesn’t mean she’s superior to her peers. To put it into perspective, the baby I held while watching the series finale has now graduated high school. I’ve had two more children who are teenagers now, gone through a divorce, bought several homes, and am currently navigating menopause. Guess what? I’ve aged too!

Why does it shock so many that celebrities look older? We’re an intelligent species; we know that shows like “Friends,” “Sex and the City,” and “Seinfeld” are reruns. They were filmed ages ago, and the actors are real people who are experiencing the normal aging process.

It’s also glaringly obvious that women in these shows face more scrutiny over their looks than men. While men are often celebrated for their distinguished gray hair, women like Sarah Jessica Parker receive criticism for their gray hair and wrinkles, even during casual outings. She remarked, “What am I going to do about it? Stop aging? Disappear?”

Similarly, the female cast of “Friends” has faced backlash, with one actress admitting the industry pressures made her feel the need to look ageless. This kind of pressure is damaging, and we should all take a step back and reconsider our comments about aging celebrities.

Imagine if a photo from two decades ago of you went viral alongside a recent one, and everyone felt the need to comment on how “old” you looked. Aging is a natural part of life! Why are we surprised by it?

We need to stop focusing so heavily on the appearances of these celebrities. Sure, they might have access to better anti-aging treatments than most, but even the most advanced procedures don’t stop the clock. Let’s find better things to discuss than superficial looks.

Women in the public eye already deal with immense pressure to maintain a certain image. While some may argue that they chose this life, expecting them not to show signs of aging and criticizing them harshly is simply out of line.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Women age—let’s accept it.

Aging is a natural process that affects everyone, including celebrities. Despite societal pressures, we should recognize and accept that all individuals, including stars, will show signs of aging. Let’s shift the focus from superficial appearances to more meaningful discussions.
