Farewell to My Summer Caregiver: A Reflection on Life Skills

I recently said farewell to my summer caregiver, and it was an emotional moment. As we parted ways, I made a playful comment suggesting that she could gain more practical knowledge during her time with us than she would in four years at university. She chuckled, but I was quite serious. The value of higher education can often be overstated, don’t you agree? To persuade her to reconsider her departure, I compiled a list of essential skills typically acquired in college that she has already mastered—making a strong case for her to stay.

Essential Skills Mastered

First on the list is the ability to coexist harmoniously with a roommate. After spending the summer with my lively children, sharing a living space with anyone else would feel like a vacation.

Next, there’s disease management. She has skillfully kept illnesses such as lice, colds, and the flu at bay during her time with us. The same principle applies to avoiding STDs: it’s crucial to keep your body away from those of unsanitary strangers.

Then we have the art of meal preparation. She has perfected the craft of making a delicious peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and she has a solid grasp on mac and cheese. Alongside cereal and frozen yogurt, these items encompass the typical college diet.

Furthermore, she has demonstrated exceptional skills in negotiation, planning, and debate. Over the summer, she acted as a referee between my four and six-year-olds, arranged playdates, and orchestrated nap times. All of these tasks have been successfully accomplished.

Additionally, she learned the importance of naps. Those precious two hours in the afternoon when the boys were asleep were vital for her mental well-being. Just as napping benefits her now, it also has its advantages during academic pursuits.

Are these not the most crucial lessons one could learn from a college experience? I may not be an exemplary student myself, but I find it compelling.

Naturally, I hope my child doesn’t take this to heart.
