You know it’s that time of year again—when the holidays sneak up and fill our lives with joy, chaos, and a bit of weirdness. From classroom parties to those holiday cards that show up from relatives you forgot you even gave your address to, it can get a little ridiculous. Thankfully, Saturday Night Live delivered a hilarious take on this festive oddity with a sketch that aired on December 11.
In the sketch, character Dan (played by Alex Moffat) comes home to find his wife, played by Lisa Villanueva, proudly displaying their holiday card collection on the fridge. “Look at all the Christmas cards! Isn’t it festive?” she exclaims. As Dan counts the cards, each one springs to life, revealing the inner thoughts of the senders.
Meet the Card Senders
First up, we see a stereotypical wealthy family on a beach, complete with matching white outfits. “Hi there! It’s your super affluent, super Christian neighbor,” says the dad (portrayed by Mike Day), alongside his wife (played by Chloe Fineman), who’s stroking her baby bump. “And yep, this is my seventh Christmas card with a baby bump. I’m never not pregnant,” she quips.
Things only get crazier from here. We’re introduced to a stylish gay couple (played by Ken Thompson and Brian Yang) who’ve spent a fortune on their “rat dog.” “As always, we’re looking fabulous while holding our ancient dog that you can’t believe is still alive,” Yang says, while Thompson adds that it took “hundreds of thousands of dollars in vet bills” to keep their pup around.
Then there’s a card featuring Punkie Johnson and pop star Demi Moore at a restaurant. “What better way to remind you that I met a celebrity 11 months ago than with my Christmas card?” Johnson jokes. In another card, Kate McKinnon embodies the single middle-aged woman trope, posing in a snorkel suit on a beach. “Every year, my Christmas card is just me on a wild vacation. What’s my deal? Am I a lesbian? A wealthy widow? You’ll never know!” she says breezily.
Billie Eilish also makes an appearance as Claire, a former classmate who enjoys holding her status over Dan. “What’s new with me? Still a diva, still richer than you, and still married to my handsome yet boring husband.” She adds, “If our matching pajamas don’t make you hate us, flip the card for a braggy list of our family’s achievements this year.” Seriously, why do Christmas cards turn into a competition? And why does every family seem to have matching pajamas?
