This Year, I’m Celebrating Valentine’s Day with My Family

I absolutely adore Valentine’s Day! There’s something so delightful about celebrating love. I’m not interested in hearing from the Valentine’s Day skeptics who say it’s just a commercialized occasion or that we should spread love every day. Let me enjoy my hearts, roses, and everything that comes with this special day!

I’ve had the same Valentine since I was 18. My partner, Max, is my one and only, and he’s the only Valentine I could ever wish for. Unfortunately, Max is currently deployed. While I can’t share details about when he left or when he’ll return, I can say that he’s been away for too long, and I miss him every single day. This Valentine’s season really stirs up my longing for him and the celebrations he usually orchestrates, knowing how much I cherish the day.

However, just because I won’t be enjoying a romantic dinner or a dance to our wedding song doesn’t mean I have to skip one of my favorite holidays. It’ll be just the kids and me at home for Valentine’s Day, so I’ve decided to make it a family affair and channel my Valentine’s spirit into creating a fun day for my little ones.

The Craft

Since Max left, I’ve discovered a passion for crafting. I recently acquired a secondhand Cricut machine and have fallen in love with it! I’m creating adorable shirts for the kids to wear during our special dinner. They’ll proudly sport shirts that say “loved,” so they can wear them long after Valentine’s Day.

The Food

For dinner, I’m whipping up their favorite meal: breakfast! We’ll have crispy bacon and eggs paired with heart-shaped waffles topped with strawberries, whipped cream, and sprinkles.

The Gifts

I’m keeping the gifts simple but meaningful. Each child will receive a few small surprises to make them feel cherished and to show that I understand their interests. I came across a lovely idea on Pinterest about a mom who writes little love notes on heart-shaped paper and tapes them to her children’s bedroom doors from February 1st until Valentine’s Day. I think that’s a wonderful tradition!

We even ventured to the craft store together to select materials for decorating their Valentine boxes for school. Normally, I’d take a more laid-back approach, but this year we’re going all out. Their Valentine’s for classmates will match the theme of their boxes!

I’m also encouraging them to write Valentine letters to their grandparents, as well as preparing a care package for their dad. We want him to feel our love, even though he’s far away. I know Valentine’s Day might be more my thing than his, but it’s essential to remind him that we’re thinking of him.

Just because my romantic love is miles away doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy a Cupid-themed celebration with the three little people I love most.
