We truly believe this little girl deserves an Emmy, Tony, and even an Oscar!
Who’s the better performer? Viola Davis, with her impressive collection of awards, or six-year-old Lily Green, who has completely captivated us by channeling Davis on her Instagram account?
Lily, a remarkable young talent, is gaining national recognition for her insightful and spot-on videos that celebrate the stories of inspiring Black artists, politicians, athletes, and inventors.
The journey began with a supportive mother and Lily’s early passion for acting and history. When Grace Green’s daughter came home from preschool with a detailed paper about Rosa Parks, she read it aloud to the then 3-year-old Lily. Curious if Lily had absorbed the information, Grace asked her a few questions about Parks. Not only could Lily answer them, but she also recited most of what Grace had just shared.
“I said, ‘Lily, wait — hold that thought!” Grace recalls. She quickly grabbed something resembling Rosa Parks’ attire that fit Lily perfectly. “I took my phone out and said, ‘Do it again!’” This marked the beginning of a fun new activity for both of them and the start of their social media journey.
“I’m a creative person and she loves learning, so it’s a perfect match,” says Grace. The dynamic duo has gained thousands of followers on their Instagram account, @lily_grow_together, where they share inspiring videos about notable Black figures. They have even appeared on local news in Detroit and Good Morning America, promoting their message of Black pride and achievement.
Lily has portrayed icons like Stacey Abrams, Angela Davis, Whoopi Goldberg, Kamala Harris, and Tina Turner, complete with costumes put together by her mom, song snippets, and energetic dance routines. Their videos are shared year-round, not just during Black History Month, and they are currently shining a spotlight on Black inventors like George Crum, the creator of the potato chip, Garrett Morgan, who invented the traffic light, and Marie Van Britton Brown, who developed the first home security system.
When choosing stories to highlight, Grace says they often feature individuals who catch Lily’s eye, like Viola Davis, whom Lily once saw on television and remarked, “Wow, she’s so pretty, we should do her!” Some selections are influenced by current events, like track star Sha’Carri Richardson’s disqualification from the Olympic Games.
Many of the individuals Lily has portrayed have taken notice of her talent. Whoopi Goldberg even sent her a box of books, including some written by Goldberg herself and other inspiring stories. Laila Ali and Erykah Badu now follow Lily on Instagram.
Grace has intentionally kept the tone of their educational content uplifting. “When I was six, I learned about the negative aspects of Black history,” she recalls, including slavery. “For my daughter’s videos, I wanted to focus on positivity.”
While the videos are gaining significant media attention now, Grace and Lily have been dedicated to this project for years, totaling 265 Instagram posts so far. “We’ve been planting these seeds for a while,” Grace shares. “Now we’re reaping the rewards.”
What’s next for Lily? They are looking forward to creating a video about Joe Biden’s Supreme Court nominee, which Grace hopes will be announced in time for Women’s History Month this March.
