A Moment of Justice
The U.S. Government has agreed to pay $127.5 million to the families of victims from the Parkland school shooting. The civil cases accused the FBI of negligence for failing to act on tips regarding the shooter, Nikolas Cruz.
On February 14, 2018, Cruz, a former student of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, tragically took the lives of 17 individuals and injured another 17. In the wake of this horrific event, families of the victims and surviving students have united to advocate for more stringent gun control laws. Additionally, they filed lawsuits against the federal government, arguing that the FBI had received multiple warnings about Cruz’s mental instability and his accumulation of firearms but did not take appropriate action.
On March 16, 2022, the U.S. government announced a settlement amounting to $127.5 million, which will be divided among 40 civil cases brought forth by survivors and 16 of the 17 victims’ families. One family chose not to pursue legal action. “It has been a privilege to represent the Parkland families who, in their profound sorrow, are committed to improving safety for everyone,” stated their lead attorney, Alex Rivers, to the Associated Press. “While no amount of compensation can replace what they lost, this settlement is a pivotal step toward justice.”
Approximately five weeks prior to the tragic shooting, an FBI tip line received a call alerting them that Cruz was purchasing weapons and had intentions to “slip into a school and start shooting the place up.” The caller expressed concern, stating, “I know he’s going to explode.” However, this critical information was not passed on to the FBI’s South Florida division, and Cruz went without investigation. In October 2021, Cruz pleaded guilty to 17 counts of first-degree murder, with his penalty trial set to begin in April, where he could face either a death sentence or life imprisonment. The Department of Justice emphasized that this settlement does not constitute an admission of wrongdoing by the United States.
