E!’s Twitter account shared a set of photos of the duo with a caption attempting playful wordplay: “Did Anne Hathaway make a deal with the devil? She is literally aging backward.” While the reference to The Devil Wears Prada is clever, the implication that Hathaway, at 39, is surprising in her youthful looks is less so.
Frustrated fans quickly responded, joking that Hathaway must be much older than her actual age for such a comment to be made. The absurdity of the caption led many to question why it’s shocking for a woman to look her age.
Critics pointed out that Hathaway, a wealthy actress, has access to exceptional healthcare, including estheticians and dietitians, which certainly contributes to her appearance. Additionally, the tweet’s focus on Hathaway’s looks at 39 stands in contrast to her male co-star, who is 11 years older. If any jokes about the occult were to be made, perhaps Leto, who has run a cult-like “Summer Camp” in real life and portrays a charismatic leader in WeCrashed, would have been a more fitting target.
While the intention behind the tweet was presumably to compliment Hathaway on her radiant beauty in a stunning dress, it’s a reminder that compliments don’t need to come with qualifiers. A person looks amazing simply because they look amazing—period.
