Recent findings indicate that one in four children and adolescents who have symptomatic COVID-19 may develop long COVID, a condition characterized by prolonged health issues following the initial infection. A comprehensive study, which pooled data from 21 COVID-19 research projects across Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America, analyzed information from 80,071 young individuals. The results showed that 25% of these symptomatic cases resulted in lingering symptoms lasting from 4 to 12 weeks or the emergence of new symptoms within 12 weeks after infection.

The most frequently reported long COVID symptoms among participants included mood disturbances (16.5%), fatigue (9.7%), sleep issues (8.4%), headaches (7.8%), and respiratory difficulties (7.6%). Other symptoms reported were a decline in concentration and memory, nasal congestion, loss of appetite, and changes in the sense of smell. While the study is pending peer review, its researchers utilized a substantial amount of data from peer-reviewed sources.

Dr. Eliza Thompson from the Global Health Institute emphasizes the importance of recognizing the symptoms of pediatric long COVID to improve diagnosis, treatment, and preventive measures. Additionally, children and teenagers are at risk for a rare but serious condition known as Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C), which can cause rapid inflammation in multiple organs and demands immediate medical intervention.
