Hello! I’m Liz Climo, an author, illustrator, and animator who spent many years contributing to The Simpsons. I also create a webcomic on Instagram, where I depict animals navigating various social circumstances in a charming and hopefully funny manner. My latest book, You’re Loved, mirrors these comics but is told from the perspective of baby animals and their loving caregivers. It serves as a gentle reminder that even when life feels overwhelming, you are cherished no matter what. Let me take you through the journey of creating this book.
The Beginning of a New Project
Whenever I start a new book, I always feel a bit daunted, and this project was no different. I aimed for a powerful image—something heartwarming that also reflects how vast and intimidating the world can seem to a newborn. I envisioned a turtle gazing directly at the reader on the opening page. It took several attempts to capture the right expression, but I’m pleased with the final result. The baby turtle connects immediately with the audience while also appearing slightly confused.
Reflections on Parenthood
Reflecting on my experiences as a parent, I remember spending a lot of time outdoors with my daughter when she was an infant. It seemed to help calm her and shift her mood (especially when she was having a tough time). I often gazed at her tiny face, convinced she was the most perfect baby in existence. Now, at eight years old, I still think she’s perfect, but I can look back at those early photos and admit that, like most newborns, she was often a wailing, sleep-averse little whirlwind of chaos (albeit the sweetest kind).
The Challenge of Feeding Kids
As many parents know, encouraging kids to eat can be quite the challenge. We made every effort to introduce a range of foods to our daughter from an early age—taking her out to restaurants and opting for regular menus instead of children’s options. Fast forward eight years, and her favorite foods now include “deep-fried and shaped like a dinosaur” and “anything beige with melted cheese.” Ah well, we did our best! This illustration is one of my favorites in the book, as it reminds me of those early days (we even had that high chair!).
Sleep Deprivation and Parenting
Sleep deprivation was the toughest aspect of new parenthood for me. Like most people, I truly value a good night’s rest, but my baby daughter had other plans. She seemed to take sleeping personally and avoided it at all costs. I remember using a video baby monitor, desperately hoping to see her peacefully sleeping, only to instead find two bright, wide-awake eyes staring back at me. This illustration was inspired by those long, sleepless nights.
The Worrier Parent
The fennec fox parent in this story is 100% me. I’m a natural worrier and often imagine the worst-case scenarios. Part of my parenting journey has involved learning to let go of many of those fears and allowing my child to simply be a kid. The subtle transformation of this character from a chronic worrier to its child’s biggest supporter mirrors how I’ve evolved as a parent over the years. While my daughter hasn’t tried skateboarding yet, she loves experimenting with new activities and has recently excelled at roller skating. Of course, I equipped her with a helmet and every protective pad I could find.
A Special Dedication
One illustration holds special meaning for me. A year ago, I lost a dear friend, and I dedicated this book to him and his three children. I wanted to create a character that represented his youngest son, and that’s who this adorable little hedgehog embodies. My friend was the kindest person I ever knew, making everyone feel safe and loved. I hope to convey some of that warmth in this book.
