What Autistic Individuals Wish to Communicate to Their Moms This Mother’s Day

Children on the autism spectrum have mothers—surprising, right? These moms are often heroes, going above and beyond to ensure their kids live fulfilling lives while navigating a world that is still learning to support neurodiversity. As an autistic individual who works with autistic children as a Speech Language Pathologist in Salt Lake City, I can personally vouch for the unwavering love, energy, and dedication these mothers show as they advocate for their children’s needs.

Reflecting on my own experiences, I am forever grateful for the countless times my mom provided comfort during my moments of anxiety over social interactions and my constant need to process my surroundings. I distinctly remember needing her reassurance to understand how to handle peer situations or needing her to guide me through adjustments with simple steps. Sometimes she had to repeat herself many times just so I could truly grasp her words and reach a place of calm. My mom was patient and always present for me.

To gain insights into the experiences of other autistic children and adults, I reached out to various personal contacts, advocates, and influencers on social media, asking this question: What do you want to tell your mom this Mother’s Day? Here are their heartfelt responses, in their own words:
