Today was the day of Max’s 5th birthday celebration. Despite my extensive planning to ensure it was a memorable event, it has now been marked as the most disappointing party I have ever hosted. In fact, it might even rank among the worst parties anyone has ever attended.
The day got off to a rocky start when the superhero entertainer I had arranged, a so-called Spiderman, arrived a whole 30 minutes late. Instead of the excited cheers I envisioned, he was met with shouts of “you’re not real!” from a room full of energetic four- and five-year-olds. Instead of showcasing the super skills we discussed, he arrived empty-handed and appeared completely unprepared. He couldn’t even initiate a simple game of tag. The children spent most of the time attempting to remove his costume, and he seemed far from amused. The atmosphere was tense, and I could see parents glancing at their watches, eager for the chaos to conclude. It was a rather dismal experience, to say the least.
However, amidst the disarray, Max was having the time of his life. He enjoyed having his friends over, crafting capes, and even appreciated the lackluster Spiderman. His joy was palpable, and he savored every bite of his cupcakes. My sweet little boy was as happy as I had hoped.
So, what was bothering me? Max was the reason for the entire celebration. His radiant smile was all that should have mattered. Why was I, usually able to find humor in most situations, feeling so discontent? In fact, I was quite frustrated. I felt anger, sadness, and disappointment wash over me. Yes, I may have shed a tear once it was all over.
This experience led me to reflect on who I was truly trying to impress. Was it the parents? The other children? My partner? Perhaps it was a mix of all of these, but the reasoning eludes me. Ultimately, the day was meant for Max, and he was the happiest kid around, just as I wanted.
It seems I have some growing up to do myself.
