As we enter World Breastfeeding Week and National Breastfeeding Month, it’s a time dedicated to honoring nursing, combating the stigma surrounding public breastfeeding, and sharing the numerous advantages of breastfeeding. These initiatives are undeniably significant and worthy of attention.
However, as a mother who was unable to breastfeed any of my children, this month often stirs feelings of inadequacy deep within me. Even nearly a decade after facing challenges with feeding my first child—and later my second and third—no other aspect of parenting has evoked as much shame and sadness, despite the myriad of hurdles I’ve encountered since.
This is precisely why I wholeheartedly embrace the “I Support You” movement. Launched by Sarah Johnson from Parenting with Purpose, Emily Carter from Formula Freedom, and Linda Brooks from Baby Steps Forward, this initiative aims to unite breastfeeding and formula-feeding mothers, emphasizing that our shared goal is to nourish our children with love, regardless of the method used.
We Stand Together
“We stand together, and we invite you to join us. You, attending breastfeeding support meetings. You, in the lactation consultant’s office, perfecting your newborn’s latch. You, quietly nursing in a dressing room. You, openly breastfeeding at your child’s sports game. You, who have shed tears over your feeding decisions, and you, who embraced your choices without hesitation.
I support you.
You, in a hospital gown, requesting formula. You, shaking a bottle while cradling your baby. You, who have researched the best formula options. You, who pump, mix, or combine feed. You, who have felt the weight of your feeding choices, and you, who chose freely.
I support you.
You, alongside your partner, feeding the baby you hope to adopt. You, who have undergone surgery and are bonding with your newborn. You, prioritizing your mental or physical health to ensure you can nourish your baby in a manner that feels right for you. You, the father finger-feeding your infant. You, the mother carefully administering formula through a G-Tube. You, pumping in the NICU, illuminated by the machines supporting your baby’s life. You, nurturing a foster child back to health. We recognize you. You are part of this dialogue as well.
We support you.
Amen to that. It is essential for all parents to receive support—every one of us.

In summary, the conversation around feeding our children should foster unity, not division. Whether through breastfeeding or formula, every parent deserves respect and support in their feeding journey.
