Why I Decided to Go Caffeine-Free During My Pregnancy

Pregnancy can be a wild ride, and for me, the journey took an unexpected turn when I decided to cut out caffeine. The transition from my usual two cups of coffee to zero has been quite the challenge. I’ve been feeling a bit sluggish and emotionally drained, which is no small feat considering the pregnancy hormones already wreaking havoc on my moods.

But this is a choice I’ve made after doing my homework. I learned that caffeine during pregnancy has been associated with various risks, including developmental issues like autism and ADD, as well as poor infant sleep patterns, extended pregnancies, and lower birth weights. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists suggested a limit of 200 milligrams per day back in 2010, which they claim doesn’t elevate the chances of miscarriage or premature birth.

Ultimately, I believe it’s a personal decision that every expectant mother should consider thoughtfully, ideally with their healthcare provider’s guidance. For me, going caffeine-free feels like the best path for my baby’s health. It may be tempting to indulge in a creamy latte, but it just doesn’t sit right with me knowing how it could affect my little one.
