A Fond Farewell to a Cherished Companion

Dear Bella,

Ending a relationship is never simple, and this farewell weighs heavily on my heart. As I closed the Rubbermaid lid over your resting spot, the sight of your bright blue eyes for the last time left me feeling quite melancholy. I will genuinely miss you.

Please don’t think this is your fault. It’s not you, and it’s not entirely me—though I did often voice frustrations over your clothes scattered everywhere, the cluttered Dream House, and your Camper parked in the middle of the basement. The truth is, our schedules are just too packed now with soccer, piano, and real horseback riding. We’ve even stopped having baths together, which used to be our special time.

I want to clarify that this decision has nothing to do with your appearance. I’ve seen real-life friends who share your slender waist and perfect features, who also run marathons, practice yoga, and give back to their communities. They embody strength and positivity, just like you.

You were never meant to be a role model for body image; that’s my responsibility, and I believe I’ve handled it well. Your purpose was to spark the imaginations of my daughters, and you did that brilliantly. You facilitated their adventures—running a veterinary clinic, organizing fashion shows, and hosting weddings one day, then performing surgeries or flying a plane to Disney the next. It was endless joy.

You never once complained, even when you found yourself in precarious situations—like being launched down the stairs in a Corvette with Princess Bella or enduring a bad haircut. You always stood ready for whatever fun came your way, with a smile and a spirit full of dreams.

It hasn’t been easy for you either; you faced a highly publicized divorce and endured media scrutiny. Despite turning 50, you still face comparisons. Yet, you’ve maintained your poise and grace throughout.

Regrettably, Bella, the time has come for us to part ways. Little girls grow up, and so must we. I’ve already sold the Dream House—at a loss, unfortunately—listed the car, yacht, and plane on Craig’s List, and sent your friends—Lila, the Disney dolls, and those brunette characters—to Goodwill in hopes that new families will cherish them. I even found another home for the Barbie Jeep and scooter, where they can bring joy to a different set of young girls. This chapter is closed.

I want to express my gratitude. Thank you for showing my children that a ball gown paired with cowboy boots is always a suitable outfit. Thank you for embracing every story they concocted for you. Despite the high heels, overly glamorous makeup, and your unique body proportions, I appreciate how you represented whatever my daughters chose to be—be it a soccer player, princess, or doctor. We managed to skip your drag queen phase, but I suspect that would have been entertaining, too.

While I am putting you away for now in the attic, you will always have a place in our hearts and memories. I hope that one day, if I’m lucky, you’ll return when my daughters become mothers themselves. I will welcome you back with open arms, and perhaps we’ll even find a new environmentally friendly Dream House for you.

Though you are just a doll, you have been so much more—a gateway to creativity and imagination in our home. You’ve excelled at your role.

Farewell for now, Bella. Until we meet again.

Warmly,

Me

P.S. I’m relieved you never took back Max. I always thought he was just riding on your coattails anyway. No one’s hair looks that perfect all the time.
