How to Effectively Guide Your Toddler for a Harmonious Living Experience

Parenting Strategies

Guiding Your Child to Sleep:

  1. Discard any resources that attempt to dictate how to sleep train your child.
  2. Politely ignore external suggestions regarding their sleep training experiences.
  3. At bedtime, assist your child in changing into pajamas and settling into bed.
  4. Offer a warm farewell such as “Goodnight, love you, sweet dreams,” then switch off the lights.
  5. Help them rise from bed in the morning.
  6. When your little one starts to exhibit signs of crankiness during the day, encourage a nap by placing them in bed. The frequency of these naps can vary based on the child’s needs; remember, a monster equals a nap.
  7. Repeat as necessary.

Encouraging Toy Cleanup:

  1. Inquire gently, “Can you please tidy up your toys now?”
  2. If your child remains unresponsive, quietly retrieve a garbage bag.
  3. Past experiences with you and the garbage bag will likely trigger a cleaning frenzy as your child scrambles to tidy up their toys.

Managing Temper Tantrums:

  1. When your child is on the floor, reacting to an unexpected situation such as milk being poured over their cereal, take a moment.
  2. Stand above them and encourage, “Go bigger! Let loose! Yell louder! Show me your wild side!”
  3. If that fails, join them on the floor and mimic their movements. Go all out!
  4. Assist your child back to their chair, likely giggling at your antics, to resume their cereal.

Instilling Politeness:

  1. Model politeness in your interactions with them.
  2. Withhold assistance (like fetching water or helping with shoes) unless they communicate politely.
  3. Continue this practice consistently.

Encouraging Shared Mealtime:

  1. Prepare a meal you enjoy for dinner.
  2. Serve a smaller portion to your child.
  3. Enjoy your meal.
  4. Clear their plate post-dinner, determining the end of the meal by whether their plate is empty or if they’ve fallen asleep at the table. They’ll likely grow to appreciate your meals over time; I can only speculate as I often resort to mac ‘n cheese to ensure they eat.

Potty Training Essentials:

  1. Eliminate the use of diapers.
  2. Show your child where the bathroom is located.
  3. Be prepared with a mop.

Fostering Kindness:

  1. Treat your child kindly.
  2. Repeat as necessary.

Disclaimer: These insights were crafted amidst the chaos of my home, where my toddler might not be potty-trained until age 12, and my six-year-old exhibits the impulse control of a wild animal. But we persist in this journey together.
