Capturing the emotions of motherhood on the very first day with a newborn is no easy task. Instead of trying to articulate it with words, photographer Mia Thompson from London dedicated five years to documenting this special moment through her lens.

Mia kicked off her project by putting up flyers around her local community, inviting new moms to receive a complimentary print if they posed with their baby just a day after giving birth. She made an effort to include women from diverse backgrounds, but one rule remained: all photos had to be taken in the comfort of their homes.

“Every single picture radiates tranquility, something you don’t experience in a bustling hospital,” Mia shared. “Once you’re back home, a unique bubble forms around you.”

This “bubble” is beautifully illustrated in the 50 images featured in her book, One Day Young (Hoxton Mini Press). While it was a challenge to select the final shots, Mia found herself drawn to the moms who met her gaze directly through the camera.

“It was their confidence that intrigued me,” she explained. “There’s a remarkable strength in their eyes, different from the typical perception of someone who just went through labor. Their looks are piercing, protective, and filled with love—completely unselfconscious.”
