I Notice You Judging: A Parent’s Perspective

I see you there, shaking your head with disapproval as my child argues with me in public. I notice your disdainful expressions and eye rolls when he strays from societal norms. I observe you instructing your child to avoid interacting with mine because you label him as difficult, disrespectful, or problematic.

While my son remains blissfully unaware of your scrutiny, I feel the weight of your judgment. Do you think I am oblivious to your stares? Do you believe that my love for my child is somehow diminished because he is uniquely spirited? Does your child’s conformity make you feel superior to us?

It takes every ounce of restraint for me to remain silent in the face of your judgment. I long to confront you and declare, “I see you! I see your judgment!” But unlike my son, I hesitate to create a scene. More importantly, I wish for him to remain unaware of your opinions, to protect his self-esteem. He is content with who he is, without the notion that he is lacking in any way. I deeply wish to keep it that way for as long as possible.

Every individual has their own struggles; perfection is a myth. Perhaps your flaw is in judging others.

You overlook the many wonderful aspects of my child. You don’t witness the unconditional love he has for me, or how fiercely he protects his loved ones. You don’t recognize his academic achievements or the joy he brings through his humor and unique outlook on life. He feels emotions deeply—both elation and sadness.

Instead, you focus on trivialities: his loud voice, distractions, or occasional emotional outbursts. From these observations, you’ve deemed him a bad kid, unintelligent, and unworthy of your attention.

Guess what? You don’t deserve mine either.

He embodies honesty, authenticity, empathy, and compassion. He strives to be his best self and does not waste time looking down on others. Instead, he embraces life and everything it offers.

Don’t you wish you could say the same?

Summary

In a world where judgment is all too common, it’s essential to recognize the unique qualities of every child. Rather than focusing on perceived shortcomings, embracing empathy and understanding can foster a more inclusive environment for all.
