Each time we sidestep an action we know is necessary, we reinforce these old beliefs.
As a child, my stepfather had an insatiable fascination with technology. He outfitted our home with intercom systems on every phone, often eavesdropping on our private conversations. The basement became a repository for cables, batteries, and various gadgets he believed might come in handy someday. We may continue to utilize these outdated self-perceptions to narrate our stories, but it would serve us better to invest in a more accurate and empowering self-image. It’s time to discard the ineffective models of our past.
