One of the joys of parenting is finding ways to motivate your child; for instance, my daughter is excited to help with chores because it means extra screen time for her. It’s a win-win situation for both of us!
Recently, we enjoyed an episode of a popular sitcom that featured characters celebrating their annual “Indulge Yourself!” day. In this episode, two friends dedicated an entire day to self-care and enjoyment.
Interestingly, there’s a significant skill involved in the art of treating oneself. When the characters planned their day, one of them suggested inviting a colleague who seemed overwhelmed and stressed. She remarked that he looked like a tightly wound spring, ready to snap. This observation holds true; when people go too long without rewarding themselves, they often become irritable and fatigued.
However, one character voiced concern that their friend might struggle to keep up with their pace of enjoyment. This highlights an important point: while indulgence can be fun, it may not be appropriate for everyone. Excessive pampering, particularly if it’s extravagant or costly, can lead to feelings of guilt or dissatisfaction.
The essence of “Indulge Yourself” day revolves around the joy of friendship and shared experiences. As one character sang, “It’s the best day of the year!” It’s evident that the time spent together mattered more than any material acquisitions.
I envision organizing my own “Indulge Yourself” day with a friend, filled with healthy treats and enjoyable activities. Incorporating small, satisfying rewards can be an effective strategy for maintaining healthy habits. When we reward ourselves appropriately, we’re more capable of meeting our own expectations. For example, after a fun outing, I find myself more motivated to stick to my fitness goals.
On the flip side, when we feel deprived of rewards, we often create justifications to indulge in unhealthy ways. This is where the concept of “loophole thinking” comes into play. When we allow ourselves healthy treats, such as those discussed in our other blog post about couples’ fertility journey, we are less likely to feel the need to justify unhealthy choices.

In summary, indulging oneself in moderation can be a powerful tool in maintaining balance in life. By sharing enjoyable experiences with friends and recognizing the importance of self-care, we can enhance our overall well-being.
