From one who works, I want to take a moment to acknowledge you and the incredible job you do. My partner, Jake, and I may not fit the traditional mold; we live in a tiny camper and homeschool our son, who has special needs. While I head out to work, Jake is the stay-at-home dad, and he truly excels at it.
I thrive on interaction and discussion, with a vibrant personality, while Jake is more laid-back, patient, and has a knack for all things outdoors. Sure, I come home to more packaged snacks and a bit of chaos, but I know that our kids are learning and exploring under Jake’s guidance, whether they’re biking, hiking, or discovering nature.
The reason I’m sharing this is not just out of admiration but also from a genuine desire to connect with those of you who dedicate yourselves to raising the next generation. For many of us who leave the house each morning to work, we want you to know how much we appreciate your hard work.
Dear Stay-at-Home Parent:
Your role is demanding, filled with endless needs and responsibilities. You are not only tasked with keeping your little ones fed and healthy, but many of you also take on the challenge of teaching them as well. And let’s be honest, you’re doing this while competing against the seemingly perfect lives presented on social media. You’re the ones on the frontlines, and we applaud you for it.
Those of us who head into the office each day want you to wear your “Stay-at-Home Parent” title with pride. But let’s have a heart-to-heart—there are a few things we wish you knew.
- We Miss You.
We really do. While you’re in the thick of things—wiping noses, playing make-believe, and handling tantrums—we’re sitting through meetings, often daydreaming about coming home to your warm smile and the joyful chaos that awaits us. We can’t wait to hear all about what your adventures were for the day. - We’d Rather Be Home.
Many of us count down to weekends and family vacations, longing for those moments of laughter and fun over spreadsheets and phone calls. Your texts or silly pictures during the day remind us why we work so hard. They are our motivation to push through. - You Look Amazing.
Seriously, you do! Those comfy clothes you wear while wrangling kids? Perfect for life’s daily chaos. Forget what anyone says about looking a certain way. We love you just as you are. And that Cheerio stuck in your hair? It’s a badge that shows our kids are well taken care of. - You’re Rockstars.
There have been times when I’ve handed the baby to Jake the moment he walked in the door, feeling like I was doing nothing but the basics of parenting. But the truth is, you’re juggling so much! From carpooling to managing daily crises, you’re managing it all. We admire you and often brag about your talents to our friends. - We Try to Understand Your Day.
We get it; your day is filled with little adult conversation. We want to hear about your triumphs and struggles, and we genuinely care. If you’re having a tough time, don’t feel like you have to put on a brave face. We’re here to listen and support. - We Need You to Understand Us Too.
When we come home, it may take a moment to transition from work mode to family mode. We appreciate your patience as we adjust. It can be tough to shift gears, especially when we’re met with the whirlwind of family life right away.
There’s a lot of beauty in the messiness of life, and we’re all in this together. So, dear stay-at-home moms and dads, keep doing what you do. You are incredible, and we are here cheering you on. And remember, we miss you and need your support just as much.
