Why We Can’t Have Nice Things

You might think, “Oh, my home is totally fine! My kids aren’t messy at all, and they always clean up after themselves.” But let’s be real—those are just lies. We all know the truth. The constant juice spills, piles of unopened mail, and the state of your kitchen—especially that microwave!—are living proof of why nice things don’t last around here. It’s like anything shiny gets instantly wrecked, muddied, or covered in dog hair.

Take my buddy Sam, for example. His three-year-old went through this wild phase where he decided that every marker, crayon, or pencil was meant for redecorating the hallway walls. I tried every cleaning solution imaginable—seriously, even that off-brand Magic Eraser—only to realize that it’s like God himself couldn’t get those marks off. A year later, our hallway looks like a toddler’s version of a Jackson Pollock painting. And you know what? It’s even worse than it sounds.

The Bathroom Battlefield

If you’ve got boys, you know the bathroom is a battlefield. They pee everywhere—well, mostly around the toilet, but even the family dog manages to contribute to the mess when it’s raining outside. I’m either stepping in puddles or sitting in them. And don’t get me started on poop. Somehow, my sons manage to smear it everywhere when they do their business. It’s a nightmare.

The Chewing Puppy

Then there’s the puppy. Let’s just say he thinks our couches are delicious. He’s chewed through three of them, and every time I think we’ve found a solution, he manages to gnaw another cushion down to the springs. We finally bought a new set from Goodwill and got him a big dog crate, but all it took was one afternoon out of confinement for him to go to town again. I might have shed a tear over that one.

The Mud and Mess

And mud? Oh, the mud. It’s everywhere—tracked through the house and smudged all over the bathroom floor. Kids have a knack for shelving books sideways and leaving them on the floor. Even library books aren’t safe! Little ones chew on them, toddlers draw in them, and preschoolers use them as building blocks for their epic forts. Juice spills and muddy fingerprints are just the cherry on top.

Tech Disasters

And let’s not forget the tech disasters. My kids have spilled coffee on my laptop and dropped my phone in the toilet. Even the older ones, who should know better, manage to make things worse. Next thing I know, I’m taking my phone to one of those sketchy repair shops, praying it doesn’t cost a fortune because, of course, I forgot to get insurance.

Pillow Forts and Stains

Kids love to build forts with every pillow and cushion in the house. Your living room ends up looking like a pillow explosion, making it impossible to sit comfortably anywhere. The comforter they used for the fort? Good luck getting that clean, especially when it’s covered in muddy footprints.

You end up covered in stains, too, thanks to all the spills. It’s a love-hate relationship with bleach. I’ve ruined more black yoga pants than I can count trying to clean up after the chaos.

The Hidden Filth

And let’s not even start on the filth lurking under the couch or inside the minivan doors. Food in the car is a terrible idea, but you never remember to make them bring in their coats, art projects, or those plastic dinosaurs. And when they get juice from Starbucks? Well, you can imagine how that ends up.
