Dear Son,
As I watch you drift off to sleep in your adorable dino pajamas, I feel a wave of emotions. You’re just five years old, full of curiosity and wonder, and it brings me joy to see how you’re soaking up the world around you. From your inquisitive questions about Transformers to the deeper inquiries about life and love, I cherish our moments together.
But tonight, one question lingers in my mind: “Why do police make you afraid, Mommy?” This question struck a chord within me, and I want to share some truths that I’ve learned throughout my life—especially as you grow up in a world that is not always kind to those who look like us.
1. The ‘Justice’ in Criminal Justice Is Not for Us
Understand that the police might not always be your allies. This is tough to accept since society often portrays them as heroes. As you grow older, I will share our personal experiences with you—real stories that reveal the complexities of how systems can fail us.
These lessons stem from my life experiences in various regions of the country, where I’ve witnessed firsthand the impacts of white supremacy—not just in systemic institutions but in everyday life. I wish I could shield you from these harsh realities, but I know I can’t. Instead, I hope to equip you with the knowledge to navigate them.

As you grow, remember that you are loved and supported. I want to ensure you have the tools to face challenges, including those posed by societal injustices.
In closing, I encourage you to stay curious, ask questions, and always seek the truth.
With all my love,
Mom
