It feels like a lifetime has passed, yet it also seems like just yesterday. We’re at the halfway point of the military deployment, and time is a curious mix of racing by and dragging on. Here’s a snapshot of what this journey looks like for our family.
Pre-Deployment Phase
Ladies and gents, let the squabbling commence! Tension is high, and everyone is caught in a hurry-up-and-wait scenario. Instead of confronting the looming emotional storm, we find ourselves bickering over trivial matters, like dirty dishes left in the sink.
Then, reality hits hard: The Goodbye.
Early Deployment Phase
In the early days of deployment, the emotional toll is immense. I hesitate to even acknowledge it, fearing that once I do, a flood of feelings will pour forth. Anger, sadness, and a sense of loss begin to surface, leading to sleepless nights and a deep, gnawing loneliness.
The Halfway Mark
As we reach the halfway point, those of us at home start to adapt to our new reality. We establish routines, and life keeps moving. Meanwhile, the one away grapples with complicated feelings: “Do my loved ones even miss me? It feels like they’re just carrying on without me.”
However, that perception couldn’t be further from the truth. We’re in survival mode, and in my home, we choose to fight through it. We push forward together, and the kids sense this resilience.
He worries about losing his role in parenting and feels sidelined when it comes to guiding our children. I’m shouldering a lot of responsibilities, which often leads to misunderstandings. His suggestions can come across as demands, and my dismissive responses only add fuel to the fire.
The cycle continues. Even though we know the routine (this isn’t our first time at this), the weight of it can still lead us to tough moments.
Each deployment brings its own set of unique challenges based on where we are in life. Remember the toddler years? Managing two little ones with hearing loss under age four was overwhelming: baths, meals, tantrums, appointments, therapy sessions—it was a constant whirlwind. Now, we’re navigating the teenage years, where the stakes are much higher: peer pressure, school challenges, hormones, and all the complexities that come with growing up.
Yet, there’s a silver lining: the love story that unfolds amid the chaos. It’s true what they say: absence really does make the heart grow fonder. Little moments of connection become even more precious, reminding us of what truly matters.
So here we are at halftime, taking a breather and preparing for the next phase. I’m holding on tight as we gear up for the final stretch.
