Turning 40 felt like a breath of fresh air that I never anticipated. While many people say that 40 is the new 20, I couldn’t disagree more. At 20, I battled insecurities and had no real sense of who I was. I often ignored that inner voice urging me to assert myself and voice my desires. It didn’t matter that I had a quick metabolism and no gray hairs back then.

Now, as I embrace my 40s, I realize that I continue to grow and evolve daily. I’m learning to love myself just as I am, and that’s where the real empowerment lies. Did this revelation hit me suddenly after I turned 40? Absolutely. It was close to my birthday when I recognized the importance of living fully, aware that time is fleeting. With a newfound confidence, I became comfortable in my own skin, leading to an unexpected surge in my sex drive—it was exhilarating!

I vividly recall confiding in my friend, “I can’t believe how often I’m… well, let’s just say I’m enjoying myself a lot lately. Is that normal?” The only challenge I faced was finding time to explore all these desires.

This new passion for intimacy stems from a deep-seated love and acceptance of myself—a feeling I had never experienced until now. As my children grew more independent, I found myself less overwhelmed and more open to physical connection. I learned to recognize what I would and would not accept in my life; women in their 40s can spot nonsense from a mile away, allowing us to prioritize our happiness and pleasure without worrying about judgment from others.

I know what suits me in every facet of life—my hairstyle, clothing choices, and yes, even my preferred intimate activities. I’ve fully accepted myself, making it easy to ask for what I want, indulge in sexy lingerie, or try out new toys. Of course, younger women do these things too—I certainly did—but back then, I felt a bit awkward about it. Now, I embrace it all wholeheartedly because the right tools can elevate pleasure from good to truly phenomenal.

And honestly, I find great joy in having an incredible sex life amidst the daily chaos of parenting—like baking cookies or mopping the floor. I’m certainly not alone in this experience; many women find that hitting 40 brings a wave of newfound sexual energy. A study discussed in Time analyzed 827 women and discovered that those who had passed their peak fertility years but hadn’t yet reached menopause were among the most sexually active. The findings showed that women aged 27 to 45 reported more sexual fantasies and greater desire than their younger counterparts, largely due to increased self-acceptance with age.

Can I get an “Amen”? With this level of comfort and connection to my sexuality, I can only imagine what turning 50 will feel like. I eagerly await the journey ahead.
