Having sisters can be a mixed bag—sometimes they can be your biggest annoyances, raiding your closet and borrowing your favorite shoes without asking (looking at you, Mia). Yet, despite the occasional squabbles, sisters often end up being lifelong confidantes and friends. Interestingly, research shows that having sisters might also contribute positively to your character.
A study conducted by Brigham Young University found that growing up with sisters can significantly improve mental health and self-esteem. The study indicates that individuals with sisters tend to be more protective of them, working to shield them from feelings of loneliness, guilt, and insecurity. This protective instinct fosters qualities like empathy and nurturing, which can enhance personal development. “Our findings suggest that sisters contribute to positive mental health,” explained Alex Jensen, an assistant professor at BYU who authored several sibling relationship studies. “As they grow older, they often play a key role in maintaining family bonds after parents pass away.”
Moreover, the research also highlighted another valuable insight: conflicts with sisters can sharpen your communication and conflict resolution skills. Jensen elaborated, “Sisters help you develop social skills such as negotiation and compromise. Even minor disagreements can facilitate healthy emotional development. If siblings can express affection despite conflicts, the positives tend to outweigh the negatives.”
One particularly surprising aspect of the study was the emphasis on how sisterly bonds foster altruistic and caring relationships, sometimes even more so than those formed with parents. Brothers also benefit from having sisters; the study indicated that boys raised with sisters tend to communicate better with women, a fact that may be intuitive but is now backed by research. So, guys, if you have a sister, consider treating her to a drink this week as a gesture of appreciation (yes, I mean you, Mark, Jake, and Sarah).
While those of us with sisters have always felt we hit the jackpot, it’s nice to have scientific evidence reinforcing our appreciation for them. In summary, having sisters not only enriches your life with friendship and support but also plays a crucial role in shaping you into a more compassionate and communicative individual.
