If I could reach back to my earlier days as a new mom, I would have so much to share with her. I’d tell her to ease her worries, to trust her instincts, and to remember that taking care of herself is just as essential. After all, she can’t pour from an empty cup.

It’s crucial to remind ourselves of our strengths, especially on those tough days when simply getting out of bed feels like a challenge. The longer I journey through motherhood, the more I witness the incredible efforts moms put into caring for their families. It’s truly awe-inspiring. However, many moms struggle to recognize and embrace their own strengths.

Often, our strengths remain hidden because we’re constantly doing so much behind the scenes, unrecognized by our families and sometimes even by ourselves. It’s not until we face illness, exhaustion, or a work trip that our families realize the extent of our contributions. Even within ourselves, we can forget to acknowledge our strengths. In my work as a psychologist, I’ve seen countless moms become uneasy when asked to identify their strengths. Ironically, many find it easier to dwell on their shortcomings and feel guilty about perceived failures rather than celebrate what they do well.

Many mothers live in a mindset of guilt and stress, rarely taking a moment to recognize their successes. Ever notice how a mom responds to a compliment? Often, she deflects it by pointing out her flaws instead of soaking in the praise. This pattern needs to change.

Recognizing our strengths isn’t always easy; it requires practice. As I’ve grown older and gained more experience, I’ve become more comfortable acknowledging my own strengths as a mom. In the early days with my twins, I felt overwhelmed and doubted my abilities. It was through the supportive words of loved ones that I began to recognize my own worth. Phrases like, “Your daughters are thriving,” and “You’re doing an amazing job,” helped me see myself more clearly.

Some of my strengths include patience, calmness during crises, and being attuned to my daughters’ needs. While I’m not perfect—because perfection doesn’t exist—I strive to be good enough, most of the time.

Now, I encourage you to reflect: What are your strengths? If you’re unsure, consider what you do well or think about the compliments you frequently receive. Everyone has strengths, regardless of their circumstances, job status, or crafting skills.

Highlighting your strengths is not about arrogance; it’s about recognizing your value as a mother. When guiding your child to learn something new or reinforcing positive behavior, you naturally celebrate their strengths. Why not do the same for yourself?

Remember, strengths don’t have to be grand—they can be as simple as loving your family and showing up with care, even on your toughest days.
