Please Let Me Know If My Child Is Being Difficult (Seriously)

Recently, I’ve found myself in several uncomfortable situations where I wasn’t sure how to respond. For instance, one of my kids was accidentally hit on the head with a rock by a friend’s child. Should I intervene? I knew it was an accident, and the other kid felt remorse. Ultimately, I kept quiet.

In another instance, I heard about the teenage child of an acquaintance I see regularly. This child has been engaging in risky and illegal behaviors that would absolutely break my heart if it were one of my own kids. What should I do? Should I speak up or stay out of it? If I were in their position, I would want to know if my child was involved in such activities.

Many parents face similar dilemmas, unsure whether to speak up or remain silent. So, let me be clear: If my child throws a rock and accidentally injures yours, I want you to inform me, regardless of intent.

If my kid is disrespectful to you, please tell me. If you suspect they are using drugs, I need to know. If you see them in an inappropriate place, I want you to speak up. Even if you only have a suspicion that my kid might be drinking at a party, I would appreciate you letting me know.

If my child is lying or bullying, or even if they’re just being rude, please don’t hesitate to tell me. If you know my child is involved in a romantic relationship or using inappropriate language around others, I want to be informed. And yes, if my partner is unfaithful (hypothetically speaking), please share that information.

If I have something embarrassing like a visible booger, or if there’s a hair sticking out from an odd place on my body, I would want you to let me know. If you notice my kid associating with questionable individuals or engaging in activities online that you wouldn’t want your own child to be involved in, please tell me.

If you find yourself unsure about whether to share something that concerns me, please do. You can always start with, “Remember when you said you wanted to be informed if your kid was being difficult? Well…”
