In recent weeks, I’ve encountered several uncomfortable situations where I was unsure of the appropriate response. One instance involved my child being struck in the head with a rock by a friend’s child. Should I intervene? It was an accident, and I could tell the other child felt remorseful. Ultimately, I chose not to say anything.
In another scenario, I learned from an acquaintance, whom I see occasionally, that their teenager was engaging in risky and illegal behavior. If it were my child, I would want to know immediately.
So, what is the right course of action? Should I speak up or remain silent? I believe that many parents find themselves in similar predicaments, unsure whether to voice their concerns or stay out of it.
Let Me Clarify My Stance:
If my child accidentally throws a rock and injures yours, please inform me, regardless of intent. If my child speaks to you in a disrespectful manner, I want to know. If they are involved in substance use, I expect you to tell me. Should you spot my child in a place they shouldn’t be, please speak up. If you hear rumors about my child using drugs—even if you’re uncertain—let me know. If there’s a chance my child might have overindulged at a gathering, I’d appreciate your honesty.
If you discover my child has lied to me, or if they’re bullying others, please bring it to my attention. If my child is simply being rude or unpleasant, I want to hear about it. If my child is engaging in sexual activity, using inappropriate language around peers, or associating with troubling individuals, I want to know everything.
Additionally, if my husband were to cheat on me (hypothetically speaking), I would want you to tell me. If I have an embarrassing issue, like a visible booger or any other awkward situation, please don’t hesitate to let me know.
Furthermore, if my kid is spending time with someone who has a questionable background or engaging in inappropriate online activities, I want to be informed. If you notice something amiss, even beyond this list, I would appreciate your honesty.
And if you’re unsure how to approach me about any of these topics, simply say: “Remember when you said to let you know if your kid is being difficult? Well…”
