The Serendipity of Motherhood: A Personal Reflection

In my quest to excel as a mother, I woke up today with a renewed sense of purpose. Balancing multiple jobs often leaves my little boy with the remnants of my energy, which translates to a rather low score on the mom scale. But today, I vowed, would be different.

We started our morning by getting ready and headed to McKinney for a car show, followed by a visit to a petting zoo. He absolutely loved it, even if it meant I had to carry his 35-pound frame in my not-so-strong arms. But hey, it was a win—I might just wake up with some muscle tomorrow!

After our outing, we returned to Denison where he took a much-needed nap. Riding the wave of my mom triumph, I decided to take him to The District in Durant, a massive arcade designed for kids. What could go wrong, right?

Just as we were about to leave for our little adventure, I turned around for a mere moment to lock the door. Mid-sentence, I was congratulating myself on being a great mom when suddenly, Hayden decided he could fly. I barely managed to finish my thought before I saw him tumble down six steps, face-first onto the concrete. Fantastic.

With six years of experience in the medical field, I’ve encountered countless injuries, but seeing my son hurt sent me into a panic. While he didn’t cry initially, his three minutes of screaming felt like an eternity. I wanted to scream with him but held back, having already exhausted my “bad mom” allowance for the foreseeable future.

This wasn’t the first time I’d found myself in such a predicament. I knew the protocol: keep him awake, monitor for any serious symptoms. So, off we went to the arcade, hoping the bright lights and noise would distract him. In hindsight, that might not have been the best idea.

He was clearly in pain, grappling with a headache and the inevitable tantrums of the terrible twos, all while surrounded by a chaotic crowd reminiscent of extras in a zombie movie. The concerned glances and probing questions about his injury added to my stress.

Fast forward three hours, with one cheap prize in tow (spending $40 on tokens and coming home with just a Tootsie Roll), and we finally arrived back home. He dozed off in the back seat while I took a moment to relish the rare quietness—a luxury I appreciate as much as finding a four-leaf clover.

Ironically, despite my perceived shortcomings today, Hayden views me as a superhero. He’s learned to kiss his boo-boo and act as if everything is okay almost immediately after. It’s remarkable that he can set aside his pain to reassure me, the adult, that he’s alright. That’s pretty amazing.

Some days, you muster all your strength to be a better-than-average mom, and others, despite your best efforts, you still feel like a colossal failure. Yet through it all, your child will continue to love you.

So, here’s a toast to all the mothers who strive to provide the best childhood for their kids, even when things don’t go as planned. Here’s to the ones who pour hours into cooking just to watch their toddler reject dinner, and to those who face the mess of laundry and dishes that pile up as we juggle everything.

Let’s honor the criticism we receive from those who can’t fathom our challenges, and acknowledge the relentless self-critique we impose. Here’s to the exhaustion, the chaos, and the incomparable love that makes it all worthwhile. And most importantly, here’s to discovering that elusive four-leaf clover in the joy of motherhood.
