Why I’m Keeping Back-to-School Clothing Simple This Year

As the new school year approaches, my son made a request for a shopping trip to the mall for new clothes, departing from our usual visits to discount stores like T.J.Maxx and Marshalls. I had to gently explain that with two other siblings also needing clothes, backpacks, and school supplies, that plan was unlikely. His disappointment was palpable.

Here’s my philosophy: Kids require food, shelter, water, and yes, they need clothes. However, I refuse to invest in overpriced jeans that will outgrow them in mere months.

If they want those high-end sneakers that cost as much as my car’s tires, they can earn the money themselves. At this age, they’re teenagers, and it’s time they learn the value of saving rather than blowing their babysitting funds on snacks and gadgets. Sorry, kids, but no way will I allow your wardrobe to surpass mine. I’m the parent, after all.

I could regale them with my father’s words whenever I begged for trendy jeans: “School isn’t a fashion show.” But honestly, no one wants to hear that. I remember feeling that school was a fashion statement then, and it still is to some extent. The debate remains whether it’s more about the kids or the parents, but I understand that looking “cool” matters to them. Yet, my bargain-hunting skills are exceptional, and they often take them for granted.

I don’t feel guilty about sending them off in off-brand or discounted clothing. If they are comfortable, warm, and still look cute, that’s what matters. A button-down shirt that didn’t come from a pricey brand is just fine. They’ll be okay without an outfit that costs as much as a week’s groceries. Plus, it teaches them to appreciate what they have.

Kids grow, spill things, and inevitably wear out their clothes, regardless of the price. As soon as they see a friend draw on their jeans, they’ll likely join in on the fun. They play outside, they tumble, they get messy, and if they want designer clothes to “keep up with friends,” they’ll need to work for it.

I have no interest in ensuring they wear the latest trends or comparing their clothing to others. Honestly, it’s exhausting just thinking about it.

The main reason I’m not indulging in a lavish back-to-school wardrobe is that they are children and don’t need extravagant clothing. My hard-earned money is better spent on essentials like braces, toilet paper, or even a candle to help me stay calm when they ask for overpriced jeans.

So yes, I’ll be taking my “deprived” kids to the discount stores, and they can roll their eyes if they want. However, I believe I’m doing them a favor by making them appreciate the more important things in life a little while longer.

Summary

In light of the back-to-school season, I’m opting for budget-friendly clothing for my kids. While they may desire trendy, expensive items, I believe in teaching them the value of money and the importance of practicality. Kids grow quickly, and I’d rather spend my resources on necessities rather than lavish clothes they’ll soon outgrow.
