As the new school year kicks off, many parents find themselves preparing for the Parent Teacher Organization’s (PTO) annual requests for volunteers and fundraising support. After several years of navigating school activities, I’d gladly pay a fee to avoid the usual hustle and bustle of PTO obligations. Fortunately, one inventive PTO at a high school in Alabama has come up with a solution for parents looking for a break.
Of course, I adore my children and want them to enjoy a variety of fun and educational experiences throughout the school year. However, my schedule is often packed, leaving little room for volunteering or soliciting funds from family and friends. The Auburn High School PTO in Auburn, Alabama, has embraced this reality with a fundraising letter that has taken social media by storm, thanks to a parent named Jenna Martin who shared it on Facebook.
The letter humorously states, “Not interested in selling items, baking for fundraisers, or participating in any fundraising at all? We completely understand!” It then lays out three options for parents:
- “I still care about this school and would like to contribute, so here’s $15. Feel free to reach out to me at ______.”
- “We are either too busy (or perhaps a bit lazy) to respond to any emails or volunteer lists, so please accept my $25 donation.”
- “Here’s $50 or MORE to forget my name and face and not ask me for anything else all year, except to return this form!”
Option three clearly resonates with many parents. While my kids’ school PTO is fantastic and not at all pushy, this cheeky approach offers a guilt-free way to contribute financially without any additional commitments. In today’s fast-paced world, many parents juggle full-time jobs and numerous obligations, making it tough to find time for school events. Plus, some of us prefer to avoid small talk with other adults, making the prospect of paying $50 to escape that scenario particularly appealing.
Jenna mentions that other parents at the school appreciate this initiative, which was crafted by PTO president Lisa Harper, who understands the challenges busy parents face. While I enjoy supporting my children’s school, I often feel overwhelmed. The ability to simply donate money instead of pushing relatives to buy overpriced wrapping paper or bake items for sales is a win-win situation.
